I don’t really remember how it happened but I tutor a high school student named Yusuke for 2 hours a week. I get paid the same amount I get paid scrubbing dishes. Today was the first session. I agreed to go because I get to make a tiny bit more money and they will give me dinner! so it’s win-win! And I get to see a real Japanese home.

The first thing I noticed when I arrived at their living room was their HUGE ASS 80+ inch LCD TV. I have NEVER seen such a huge LCD TV. Like seriously, what the hell! I think the biggest we had in Vancouver was like 60 inch? Or the 72 inch in the Sony Store that no one could afford. this thing was insanely big and just took over a wall. They were watching volleyball tournaments but it was S~WE~ET! The next thing I noticed was the stack and stack of ayumi hamasaki and koda kumi DVDs. It ranged from every Arena tour and single CD / DVDs. I guess now I know how much money ayumi makes. I was trying to make conversation with yusuke so I asked him, “so you must like ayu a lot eh?” And then he said, “oh those are all my dads.” His dad seems like a nice man~~ with Erika Fujisawa wallpapers and were listening to Utada Hikaru’s “HEART STATION” album the whole time he was working on architecture drawings. I see that in Japan, J-pop is for EVERYONE.

So I don’t really teach the kid anything, the goal of me being there was just to speak english, and talk with him to get his conversational skills up. Which was hard because he didn’t like to talk, at least not to me. I tried asking him so many questions, but it failed again and again. the only thing that he likes is soccer, and everything that he does is revolved around soccer.

it was hard because the only thing that I knew about soccer was David Beckham and that was related to Posh Spice. I tried my best, but I think he was remotely interested when I brought up some soccer stuff..

But, their TV, it’s a work of art.

AND! they had their own beer tap at home! HOLY ! I want my own beer tap!!!

It was good, except I didn’t get to eat that much, because the whole time I was trying to talk to him and eat. It was really hard T_T

and then we had super super rich chocolate cake, which was even too rich for me. I wanted to throw up half way with black coffee. If you know me, you’d know that I don’t drink coffee that much, i pop caffeine pills if the occassion calls for it. But, I chugged it down because it would be rude to refuse. I have a huge headache…

One of my duties while being in Japan is probably trying out every time of instant foods there is. I think instant food is sub par in North America. In japan, there are so many different type of instant food, and the word instant is much more defined here. Pretty much everything you buy in the freezer aisle can be prepared with ONE APPLIANCE. It looks like a microwave, it functions like a microwave but it does so much more. It’s their version of the oven, it does everything. The only con of this appliance is that it doesn’t rotate, the food just sits there while being heated.. .

This is today’s creation, it could be cooked in the aforementioned appliance, but, the picture made it look crispy so i pulled out the frying pan.

So far so good…

This is what happens when you try to flip a frozen piece of chinese/japanese pie with onions using chopsticks. It breaks in half.

This is what it ended up looking like in a bowl. It even came with sauce! Spicy / vinegar / soy sauce all in one ?

Then I tried making chicken… mind you this was pre-seasoned so I just have to fry it up. But it has been sitting in the fridge for a while so I was afraid that it’ll go bad so I stuck it in the freezer. This is what happens if you don’t thaw your meat!

I ended up with a mouth full of uncooked meat, I am extremely scared of uncooked meat. After learning all that in microbiology, I am extremely careful, much rather eat overcooked, wood tasting chicken than fleshy chicken. I spat it out of course…

Final product, chicken on top with mysterious pie on the bottom. It tasted okay, I finished 89% of it, the rest is sitting lovely in the kitchen as I procrastinate on the dishes and cleaning..

there’s a bookstore near my house, across from the 7-11 that I frequent. it is a used bookstore that sells manga and CDs. Yesterday on the way to the supermarket to buy beer and chips (essential food staples of the -need to pass time-) I spontaneously bought volume 15 – 17 of Lovely Complex. I am now only missing volume 1. I have the rest of the volumes in Chinese though. It’s kind of weird, but at least my collection or as soon will be complete?

The cover of volume 15, the mangaka deliberately drew Risa to look like Ema Fujisawa!!!! The actress that played Risa in the live-action version of the manga. The manga were extremely cheap and good quality, the stickers were still there! My taiwan version of the manga, around volume 6, the stickers stopped coming, I thought the mangaka started to cheap out and not include them, but actually the tw version started to be cheap and not include them.

I love the bookstore very much and today I bought Utada Hikaru’s 2nd album, Distance for only 500 yen!? And it was like newww! It’s kind of like a treasure hunt because there are so many random albums there. Distance is my favorite hikki album thus far.

I once read somewhere, perhaps on wikipedia? That the First Love album sold so much because of the super high quality glossy paper that they used to print the album booklet or something, holy crap, it Is super glossy?! I’ve never had such glossy booklet paper? I listened to the album on my laptop, I couldn’t tell the difference, hopefully when I go home and try it on my CD player the difference will be magnitudes.

I am enjoying the 2nd hand bookstore very much, I remember there being one near my university that sold hard to find biographies that we needed to write out papers with. But I dont remember going in once. I remembered buying it new at the bookstore then returning it … because I need 1 quote and the book was not at the library and $100. Sorry…

So are there used book stores near you?

I also realized that when people blog, it tend to be about one thing, such as, peppers, or cat-store? or MSG4. But I always write about whatever I want in a ramble about nothing, well my life, but yeah.

So far living on my own for 1 month had lead me to savor the large variety of instant, microwavable (although they have this awesome oven thingy that is kind of like a microwave) foods. But look!? I made chicken and stir-fry cabbage that my mom use to make, but hers tasted better, duh.

The chicken was pre-soaked in whatever, I just had to fry it in a pan. Although that may seem like nothing, it was a BIG deal to me. And I am getting better at not cutting my hand. Win-win.

My boss mama-san asked me to go play at the store, because they were making ume-shu. It’s plum wine? But it needs to be soaked for 6 months. Too bad I won’t get to taste it. Annnnd! WE also made the new sign for the store. I drew the chicken in the corner.

Finished product!

And i got this, but I dont know how to eat it..

500 CC! Upgrade size of beer here. Very important since I can’t sleep at night / in the morning because my cousin is talking on the phone / waking up super early to do laundry, maybe this will knock me out of tonight! Please do… I can’t take another night of 2 am and still chatting on the phone, SIGH!

shopping = trouble

Oh wells, troubles can be dissolved.

I had so many things to say yesterday but now I forgot them ALL! Sigh, okay I am going to start writing things down or emailing them to myself.

Things such as, how people hang out at cafes till 1 am to study? I find it kind of rude that people do that since aren’t there other customers? but maybe it’s alright because there are more cafes than people?

shopping was funnnn!!! by myself even though, it was still funnn!

The zebra stripes makes me feel so urban, I wanted to catch a photo where the people was packed, but they walked faster than i can pull out my camera.

When i got out of the station, I was trying to get to this super huge shopping place? Which consisted mostly of electronics, very exciting by the way, nerds everywhere. but the laptops were beautiful!!! They had the most amazing tablets.

I got lost on the sky pedestrian bridges, for 30 good minutes. It was blazing hot too.

After finally obtaining all 3 items for winney. I was so hungry =_= I actually wanted the set meal, maybe the cashier didnt hear me T____T But this was good too! Kansai styled Omurice, it has that flaky stuff on takoyaki.

then went shopping for useless things that I LOVE!!! i don’t have money for food but I can buy this…

I kept wondering if this was suppose to be that scary baby on the mayonnaise bottles but it’s cute and well crafted so I bought it. . DONT JUDGE ME! At least I didn’t collect them all yet.

This is the tshirt collection, there’s also the fruits on the head collection but I like tshirts so much.

@ the store where I bought all the useless but wonderful things, they have displays of toys! Like miniature versions of real edible things.

okay I have like no witty things to say today, so more pics woohoo!

( commercial break )

( end commercial break )

BONUS! Crappy quality picture from my cell phone, they sell the mugs from LAST FRIENDS (the drama) It was like $20, insane! they only paid $10 in the drama for this ;__;

I also spent a lot of time at bookstores yesterday, I really like the bookstores in Japan because everyone can read without being disturbed? The books are beautiful. I love the design books, there are quite a few I want but I have no money for right now. i think maybe before I leave I’ll go back and buy them.

Makes me wanna quit school and buy a tablet and be a cool free lance designer that sips coffee and hangs out at bookstores all day!

sent / received 150 emails in one day! good job, on my way to becoming a japanese 16 year old girl

A few days ago I was bored out of my mind sitting on my ass and going through withdrawl because House was downloading and there was nothing to watch but maybe Ugly Betty. Which I enjoy if I am high or drunk (kidding about this part).

Anyways, I decided that my trip here, is to experience Japanese youth, meaning I try to be like Japanese youth of my age, doing what they do? I was really getting no where until today, I bought my cell phone!? It was so much cheaper than I expected so I am happy, however I still don’t have a phone number / email address because I am under 20 and I need an adult to guarantee for me so tomorrow I’ll go ask my boss at my work place.

When I know my number / email feel free to flood me with emails, because apparently emailing on this thing is unlimited!

This is the Softbank 705Px made for PREPAID cellphones only, I bought it at Family Mart, some konbini store, I was pretty surprised since even SoftBank locations don’t carry it.

This phone by Japanese cell phone standards is pretty before millennium I feel, it only has a 2MB pixel camera, although TWO CAMERAS! wOAH for video phone, and TV and internet and what not. But, it’s screen is smaller than the usual ones I’ve seen but seriously it’s more high tech than anything I’ve seen in Vancouver.

Soon I’ll be on my way to emailing mad fast like Hachi (If you don’t know who Hachi is, shame on you). I think I’ll be getting the full youth experience lol…

Yes okay, other pix, my new favorite tshirt because people stare at me with it, I wonder why, I get a lot of nasty looks from older folks. TEHEHE.

This was peculiar…

Kyoto Daytrip

I was really looking forward to today because yes, I get to talk to another human being! I went to Kyoto with Ui-san. From where I live, Takatsuki city, is very close to Kyoto. Taking the train is about 30 minutes or so, and that will take you to the center of Kyoto.

Although most of the pictures you see are of temples and what not, I mostly shopped today. For some reason, I like the shops in Kyoto more than in Osaka. Kyoto shops are more unique, although extremely expensive, the things they sell seem more special and unique.

Oh I dont think I ever mentioned how I met Ui-san. I met her randomly on the train, she’s studying to be a Chinese – Japanese translator. Her chinese is very good. Her friend whom I met today studies English, and was born in England. Multilingual FTW?

I know everyone must miss my face since I usually go by myself and no one can take pictures of me ~~

This is some bridge~~

Random building near the bridge~~

One strain is 1000 cranes, crazzzyyy~~ I think if you are bored and desperate enough you can make your own and ask it to be hung?

Sorry my face is weird~ but er bell shaking after you donate money and making wish!

A cool looking street, I feel compelled to post about. I love how my jeans look here ~!

More temple pictures

I really like this picture! The red lanterns and fence are pretty.

(Left to Right) Julie-san, Ui-san and ME~~!!!! I dont know why I’m not smiling. Too full from my burger?

We ate at a cafe named Very Berry. It’s really good. Well I had the burger today but if you go and have their waffle selection, it’s amazing~~!! The place was showing spongebob squarepants, because it’s an American themed? Or Hawaiian themed, I will definitely want to go back to eat lots and LOTs of waffles. *ddrrrooollss*

Julie-san and I

Did some shopping at Lowry’s Farm and they gave me this cute recyclable bag. Also bought a cute zip-up? like shirt which I found a tiny stain on when I came home. THE THING IS WHITE BTW! I tried washing it, hopefully it’ll come out, hopefully.
